About the Artist

Clifford Holmes - Biography

About

Cliff was born and raised in Liverpool, U.K. He was first encouraged to start experimenting with various media by his longtime friend and first year university house mate, Dave Walsh, in 1970.  Experimentation involved mainly poster paint on paper reproducing the works of Alphonse Mucha, Japanese masters and Superhero comic figures.

Over the subsequent 4 decades Cliff pursued a career in science and medicine but the challenge and enjoyment of creating art kept inserting themselves intermittently over this time.   A period of experimenting with pastel, pencil and charcoal portrait drawing in the 90’s was followed with a more concentrated effort in acrylic on canvas painting starting in 2010 under the tutelage of Tom James.  In 2016, Cliff started the journey of watercolor technique guided by Gayle Imamura Huffman.  Cliff continues to learn and better his techniques via in person and on-line classes and workshops.

Cliff prefers representational and realism forms selecting watercolor, acrylic or occasionally oil as the medium of choice depending on the subject material.

Cliff has lived in the Chicagoland area for nearly 40 years with a recent stay in Washington State.
